Kaikoura Peninsula – December 1
Dramatic Eastern Coastline!
We hiked the Forest Walk near our campsite and looked for geocaches the next morning. There was a maze of trials just outside the village in a very flat and heavily forested area. I found the walk less interesting than our previous day’s walk to Dog Stream Waterfall. But Fred got a lot of wildflower pictures.
We met with the mechanic who replaced a bad fuse and then headed towards Kaikoura. The road we took was full of twists and turns. We geocached along the way. One of the places we stopped was at a small town museum that was closed. A local thought we were there to see the museum and he got really chatty with us. We finally told him we were really there to find a cache in the shrubbery. He was amused, and I hope not too disappointed we weren’t there for the museum.
We arrived at Point Kean carpark, had lunch, and set out at low tide for a loop walk around the peninsula. There was a nesting ground for the gulls (?) that was wild and noisy with activity. Two people were in the middle of them with clipboards. I’m not sure what they were monitoring, but they looked rather official. We saw a few seals, but they were quite inactive in comparison to the birds.
It was a nice coastal walk with wonderful views of the mountains capped with snow across the bay. We checked in to Alpine Pacific Holiday Park to clean up a bit before our Argo Tour.
Alistair was our guide for our Argo tour. His family has owned Glenstrea Farms for several generations. The Argo circuit is 20k around the hills and streams of his farm. It was a lot of fun. We got gorgeous photos from above Haumuri Bluffs, and had fun chasing livestock. It was just the three of us and for the price, the Argo option is a lot of bang for your buck. It also gave Fred a break from driving.
