Why?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-8rQwwfD\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-8rQwwfD\/0\/6f866a86\/S\/P1020487-S.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Karapiro is a tiny and less-known town. \u00a0It has a lake and is not far from Cambridge. \u00a0Cambridge is rather upscale and has lots of horse properties. \u00a0I had reserved a cottage on a horse ranch outside of Karipiro.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-R89d82p\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-R89d82p\/0\/dbd3c803\/S\/P1020421-S.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-3DPdj2z\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-3DPdj2z\/0\/bf8c6af6\/S\/P1020426-S.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We could see for miles outside our door. \u00a0And it had a very friendly cat, Toby. \u00a0Most people go to the town of Matamata to do Hobbiton because it is where all the tourists go, just&#8230; because. \u00a0Heck, I don&#8217;t know why they go to Matamata &#8211; lots of motels, shops, and cafes I guess. \u00a0I promised Fred that he could see Hobbiton. \u00a0We splurged on the Evening Banquet Tour. \u00a0But we had an entire day to fill before then.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I had hoped to drive up to the local kayak place and get a couple of kayaks, but it was not to be &#8211; even after showing up 2 times. (Ironically, the couple next to us at the feast that night rented paddle-boards on the spur-of-the-moment from the same guy with no problems). The winery on tap that day had decided to change from weekend tastings to appointment only. \u00a0Bummer.<\/p>\n<p>We headed through the town of Tirau with all its corrugated\u00a0signboards and buildings. \u00a0Then to Pataruru and stopped at Over the Moon Dairy for cheese tasting. \u00a0Unlike Mercer cheese, you don&#8217;t need to be coy &#8211; just ask to taste some cheese. \u00a0They have a special chilled room and 6 cheeses for tasting. These are mostly semi-soft cheeses like Brie. The Tomme (buffalo and goats milk cheese) is to die for! Fred loved the triple-cream Brie!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-jxwD5Bj\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-jxwD5Bj\/0\/e138df09\/S\/P1020453-S.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-qrvtdbf\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-qrvtdbf\/0\/a293aff1\/S\/P1020440-S.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We went on a short walk nearby. \u00a0It&#8217;s called the Blue Springs at Te Waihou Walkway. \u00a0We started from the top, closer to the springs and walked along the river. \u00a0It was full of some sort of seaweed that thrived in the blue waters. \u00a0It was very pretty and we found some geocaches there.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-mt22Zk7\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-mt22Zk7\/0\/3309568f\/S\/P1020438-S.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then we had lunch at the Lily Pad Cafe and enjoyed it very much. \u00a0The cafe is located next to a garden art studio and much of their work is displayed in the gardens around the open-air cafe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-M3TMmPj\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-M3TMmPj\/0\/ef59c28b\/S\/P1020461-S.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-8m9FndD\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-8m9FndD\/0\/c9123a85\/S\/P1020457-S.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On the return to our cottage, we stopped by Lake Karapiro and crossed the one-way dam road, stopping to enjoy the lake views.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That night, we drove the back road to Hobbiton. \u00a0It&#8217;s located on private land you have to take a shuttle bus in.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-5g3JLz2\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-5g3JLz2\/0\/dfe97098\/S\/P1020484-S.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-fsjfxTS\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-fsjfxTS\/0\/ba137b24\/S\/P1020469-S.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>We were given plenty of time for photos. \u00a0Even though I am not a LOTR fan, I enjoyed the gardens and attention to detail. \u00a0Our guide often spoke about how Peter Jackson was a stickler for detail, even having the crew repaint the leaves of a fake tree because they were the wrong color of green! \u00a0The Hobbit Holes are in two sizes to give the illusion of the actor appearing before it the appropriate size. \u00a0There are no &#8220;insides&#8221; to the holes but one, and that only went as far as the entryway.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the go-round of Hobbiton, we entered the Green Dragon and had our feast &#8211; a HUGE feast! \u00a0Things were a bit chaotic, but I think it was supposed to be in fitting in with the way Hobbits are supposed to eat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-NmHsJtH\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/2017-New-Zealand\/i-NmHsJtH\/0\/aeaa8c90\/S\/P1020489-S.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll end this with one more comment about New Zealand cheese &#8211; they don&#8217;t do cream cheese very well. \u00a0It\u2019s very flat tasting and doesn\u2019t have the tang it does in the states.
