{"id":451,"date":"2014-08-24T14:31:22","date_gmt":"2014-08-24T21:31:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fmsreliability.com\/adventures\/?p=451"},"modified":"2014-08-24T15:06:39","modified_gmt":"2014-08-24T22:06:39","slug":"december-8-fox-glacier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fmsreliability.com\/adventures\/2014\/08\/24\/december-8-fox-glacier\/","title":{"rendered":"December 8 &#8211; Fox Glacier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The day started bright and clear, with just a tiny cloud covering the peak of Mount Cook.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Lake Matheson Bridge\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/2012NZ\/i-KFFfvx6\/1\/S\/Lake%20Matheson%20Bridge-S.jpg\" alt=\"Lake Matheson Bridge\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We headed for Lake Matheson. \u00a0The track around it ambles through the forest for the most part. \u00a0It&#8217;s broken up by three wooden landings that are on the lakeshore, and a wooden walkway through the tules at the far end of the lake. \u00a0A swing bridge is at the beginning of the loop.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Stupid Ducks!\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/2012NZ\/i-wv9tq69\/2\/S\/Stupid%20Ducks%21-S.jpg\" alt=\"Stupid Ducks!\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the first landing there were about 7 photographers standing and waiting for that last wisp of a cloud to clear over Mount Cook. \u00a0Everyone was so quiet and it felt kind of eerie. \u00a0We forged ahead and got to the Reflection Island landing on the other side of the lake.\u00a0 We were the only ones there! \u00a0I thought the view of Mounts Cook and Tasman was much better there as well.\u00a0 We stayed a full\u00a010 to 15 minutes enjoying the serenity. \u00a0Fred waited for that last little cloud to evaporate and just as it did, a group\u00a0of ducks swooped in and landed on the lake, disturbing the glassy reflection. \u00a0Every time we see that\u00a0picture, we comment, &#8220;Stupid ducks!&#8221; \u00a0As we returned to the camper, we noticed the tour buses had arrived with loads of people. \u00a0Great timing!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Lake Matheson\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/2012NZ\/i-fzS6BJP\/1\/S\/Lake%20Matheson-S.jpg\" alt=\"Lake Matheson\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Glacier runoff\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/2012NZ\/i-3H2B7K3\/2\/S\/Glacier%20runoff-S.jpg\" alt=\"Glacier runoff\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We still had much of the morning before our helihike at 11:50, so walked to the terminal face of the glacier. \u00a0As you drive the road, you see signs stating where the terminal face had been in past years. \u00a0It&#8217;s alarming to see how much it has receded in a short amount of time. \u00a0The walk itself follows the runoff from the glacier which is rather grey and has chunks of ice in it. At the end there is a rope set up alerting you to stay behind it and not go any closer to the ice wall. \u00a0Apparently some tourists don&#8217;t think the warnings apply to them and two young men lost their lives a couple of years ago.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Kea\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/2012NZ\/i-TtKr79R\/2\/S\/Kea-S.jpg\" alt=\"Kea\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When we returned to the carpark, a woman was getting something out of her backpack and a curious Kea was right behind her looking on.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Minnehaha Walk\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/2012NZ\/i-PCfVcmx\/2\/S\/Minnehaha%20Walk-S.jpg\" alt=\"Minnehaha Walk\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We drove back to the little town of Fox Glacier, parked our campervan across from Fox Guides and walked part of the Minnehaha Track. \u00a0The track is in a thick rainforest and is popular after dark because you can see glowworms there. \u00a0We were happy to find the geocache\u00a0hidden within.<\/p>\n<p>We checked in at Fox Guides and were asked to wait in the giftshop. :\/ Then our group of about 15 boarded a bus and we drove out to one of several helipads in the area. We got instructions of helicopter protocol, outfitted ourselves in wooly socks and boots, and were divided into 3 groups of 5. Then we boarded our helicopter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"View from helicopter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/2012NZ\/i-dnvm6BH\/2\/S\/View%20from%20helicopter-S.jpg\" alt=\"View from helicopter\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The flight up to the glacier involved a bit of meandering closer to the moraine walls. The photographers in the group snapped pictures of the waterfalls. Fred was up front, and I was in the back. The entire trip took 8 minutes and then we landed on the glacier.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Zarah\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/2012NZ\/i-SNrDPtL\/A\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Zarah\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/2012NZ\/i-SNrDPtL\/2\/S\/Zarah-S.jpg\" alt=\"Zarah\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Zarah was our Australian guide and had quite the snarky sense of humor.\u00a0 We were given our crampons and Zorah used her ice pick to create steps in the ice. At several places, she would stop and give us historical and geological information about the glacier.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Ice arch\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/2012NZ\/i-JdJ26CH\/2\/S\/Ice%20arch-S.jpg\" alt=\"Ice arch\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We saw a couple of ice caves and arches, and there was one place they set up a slide through a tunnel. The glacier is constantly moving and changing, so the arches, caves and tunnels we saw that day may be gone the next day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Fred and Diane chillin\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/2012NZ\/i-F47bKkS\/2\/S\/Fred%20and%20Diane%20chillin-S.jpg\" alt=\"Fred and Diane chillin\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were several \u201cphoto opportunities\u201d. Zarah made sure everyone got a photo of themselves on the glacier. On the return helicopter flight, I was seated front and center. I really loved that experience, even though it was a direct trip back to the helipad.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Overall, it was a good experience, but a little pricey and commercial.
