{"id":419,"date":"2014-08-21T16:11:27","date_gmt":"2014-08-21T23:11:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fmsreliability.com\/adventures\/?p=419"},"modified":"2014-08-22T08:49:02","modified_gmt":"2014-08-22T15:49:02","slug":"maunganui-waikite-valley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fmsreliability.com\/adventures\/2014\/08\/21\/maunganui-waikite-valley\/","title":{"rendered":"Maunganui and Waikite Valley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beach Town, Jungle Tramp, and Thermal Pools&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Stream on path to Wairere Falls\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/NZ2011\/i-2PHMCjc\/0\/S\/Wairere%20Falls-S.jpg\" alt=\"Wairere Falls\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next morning, the kids for various camp activities had descended upon us and we headed out.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Mt Maunganui\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/NZ2011\/i-kJ89dJH\/0\/S\/Mt%20Maunganui-S.jpg\" alt=\"Mt Maunganui\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not far from Tauranga is the seaside village of Maunganui.\u00a0 It started off very foggy and we stopped in the actual town at a Starbucks to avail ourselves of WiFi.\u00a0 We walked around and got a geocache near some huge Pohutokawa trees between town center and the beach road.\u00a0 And then parked right along the beach as the fog was lifting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Moturiki Island (Mt Maunganui)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/NZ2011\/i-rmLCCCD\/0\/S\/Moturiki%20Island%20%28Mt%20Maunganui%29-S.jpg\" alt=\"Moturiki Island (Mt Maunganui)\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Our intent was to climb Mount Maunganui, but the fog prevailed on the inland side and we decided to head out to Moturiki Island, which was currently walkable, instead.\u00a0 We had lunch in the van, right at the beach, and then headed on.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Wairere Falls\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/NZ2011\/i-Pv55R8w\/0\/S\/Wairere%20Falls-S.jpg\" alt=\"Wairere Falls\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Driving over the hill towards Matamata, we were met with quite a squall, but it all cleared up by the time we got to our destination, Wairere Falls.\u00a0 You could see the falls from the road at times, but the hike to them took a good 45 minutes to the viewing platform.\u00a0 The end had a several story-high staircase.\u00a0 You could hike further to the top of the falls, but we decided to take our photos and head back.<\/p>\n<p>We made our way to Waikite Valley Thermal Pools, where we had reserved a site for the night.\u00a0 The great thing about camping at Waikite Valley is that for a few dollars more than a typical campsite, you have free entry to natural mineral pools.\u00a0 Fred and I soaked for 20-30 minutes and about the time our skin was starting to prune, we wandered back to our campervan.\u00a0 They had a popular kitchen facility and we took advantage of the hot showers and laundry there.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Waikite Valley Thermal Pools\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/NZ2011\/i-Bg3tC3C\/0\/S\/Waikite%20Valley%20Thermal%20Pools-S.jpg\" alt=\"Waikite Valley Thermal Pools\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><a class=\"cont\" title=\"Rotorua\u2019s Thermal Areas\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fmsreliability.com\/adventures\/2014\/08\/21\/rotoruas-thermal-areas\/\">The Adventure Continues&gt;&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Beach Town, Jungle Tramp, and Thermal Pools&#8230;.
