{"id":1144,"date":"2018-05-03T17:59:53","date_gmt":"2018-05-04T00:59:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fmsreliability.com\/adventures\/?p=1144"},"modified":"2018-05-06T10:48:26","modified_gmt":"2018-05-06T17:48:26","slug":"hidden-gems-north-of-cork","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fmsreliability.com\/adventures\/2018\/05\/03\/hidden-gems-north-of-cork\/","title":{"rendered":"Hidden Gems North of Cork"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-7L7tC6h\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-7L7tC6h\/0\/948b071e\/M\/P1030256-M.jpg\" alt=\"River at Glanworth Castle\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>9\/10 <\/strong>\u2013 Today was a travel day, but I had several stops along the way.\u00a0 Our destination was Kenmare and most people would go via Cork and the Blarney Castle to kiss the Blarney Stone.\u00a0 Since I don\u2019t think that\u2019s very appealing and we just aren\u2019t most people, we took a different route.<\/p>\n<p>First up was the Hags Bed Tomb.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think that\u2019s the real name of it.\u00a0 No, it\u2019s the Labbacallee Wedge Tomb.\u00a0 Most anyone would drive by and think it was a pile of rocks.\u00a0 But like everything in Ireland, there were several stories about it (including how two giants hurled rocks at each other and of how former tomb-raiders were scared off by a cat with fire shooting out of it). When excavated in 1934, they found the body of a woman in one chamber and her head in another.\u00a0There was a geo-cache there and it&#8217;s right on the road, so we checked it out.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-jfBWg48\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-jfBWg48\/0\/1ac8a96a\/S\/2015-10-03-12.39.04-S.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><em>Labbacallee Wedge Toom dates to 2400 BC and is the largest wedge tomb in Ireland. \u00a0It has 3 capstones, the largest is estimated to weigh 10 tons. \u00a0How they got that stone on top is anyone&#8217;s guess. \u00a0Tomb raiders have left it alone as it is said to be cursed.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Then we moved on to Glanworth Castle and Mill.\u00a0There really wasn\u2019t anything special about the castle, and the mill was being refurbished.\u00a0 The bridge was rather pretty and made for some good pictures.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-DPzVhV9\/A\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-DPzVhV9\/0\/779aa5eb\/M\/P1030257-M.jpg\" alt=\"Glanworth Bridge\" width=\"384\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><em>Glanworth Bridge is a 12-arch bridge built in 1446 and touted as \u201cthe oldest and narrowest working road bridge in Europe\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Next was Bridgetown Priory, also with a geocache.\u00a0I didn\u2019t think this would be much, but it was very pretty and nicely kept.\u00a0 Plus, there were police dogs in training!<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-q2MGk2c\/A\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-q2MGk2c\/0\/98c01101\/S\/P1030270-S.jpg\" alt=\"Police Dog Training at Bridgetown Priory\" width=\"283\" height=\"377\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>We saw police dog training while at Bridgetown Priory. \u00a0The writers of a blog I followed also saw them. \u00a0Yet I can&#8217;t find anything about it on the internet. \u00a0Pure coincidence, I suppose.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ballybeg Priory was next.\u00a0 This was totally skip-able.\u00a0 BUT, had it not been for a blog I had been following (as for the previous stops as well), we would not have known to jump over the wall and check out the cylindrical building in the field.\u00a0 In short, they kept 400 doves in this \u201cDovecote\u201d and harvested their guano back in the days.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-sXCfmZW\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-sXCfmZW\/0\/2fbfb329\/M\/P1030274-M.jpg\" alt=\"Dovecote at Ballybeg Priory\" \/><\/a><em>Inside the dovecote at Ballybeg Priory. \u00a0Each cubby housed a dove and there is an opening at the top of the tower. \u00a0Although doves were thought of as &#8220;vermin&#8221;, their guano was prized for use as fertilizer.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>So thank you, Plan \u2013 Pack &#8211; Go, for your blog!\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/plan-pack-go.com\/tag\/ireland\/\">http:\/\/plan-pack-go.com\/tag\/ireland\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>They also directed us to our next stop, the Donkey Sanctuary.\u00a0 I think we would have enjoyed it more if it hadn\u2019t started raining!\u00a0 We walked around a short trail which probably had great views on a clear day.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-LVDMNTK\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-LVDMNTK\/0\/0ae26bcb\/S\/P1030283-S.jpg\" alt=\"Donkey Sanctuary\" \/><\/a><em>A pair of donkeys at the Donkey Sanctuary. \u00a0The red collar means they are geldings. \u00a0There are currently 700 donkeys in the sanctuary&#8217;s care. \u00a0They take in\u00a0abandoned, abused and neglected donkeys from all over Ireland.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>It became very gusty and rained harder as we approached our accommodation for the next few nights at Kenmare.\u00a0 We stayed at the Shelbourne Lodge.\u00a0 This was a beautiful and grand building full of antiques.\u00a0The couple who own (?) it were very welcoming, but the woman who managed it was a bit stand-offish.\u00a0 She might have been overworked, I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 But we were within walking distance of town and it is a very upscale, but small town.\u00a0 I thought it a better base than nearby Killarney.\u00a0 Dinner that night at Mulcahy\u2019s \u2013 awesome!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-XQNPBXz\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\"
