{"id":1142,"date":"2018-05-03T18:00:23","date_gmt":"2018-05-04T01:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fmsreliability.com\/adventures\/?p=1142"},"modified":"2025-04-15T11:29:56","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T18:29:56","slug":"dungarvan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fmsreliability.com\/adventures\/2018\/05\/03\/dungarvan\/","title":{"rendered":"Dungarvan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-fS99tn7\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-fS99tn7\/1\/64446203\/M\/P1030154-M.jpg\" alt=\"Dungarvan Harbor\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>9\/8 <\/strong>\u2013 This morning we had our morning meal.\u00a0 Gertie provided a menu and I chose a poached egg on toast and Fred an omelet.\u00a0 Both included fruit and pastries to start, \u201cporridge\u201d for the mid-course, and then our choice.\u00a0 (I later decided that a 3-course breakfast was a bit much for me.)\u00a0 Gertie was very \u201cGrandmotherly\u201d and when the porridge was served, she scooped the brown sugar for us, plopped it on top of the porridge, and poured the whiskey (!) over it to dissolve it properly.\u00a0 \u201cThis is where the magic happens\u201d, she would say.<\/p>\n<p>The eggs were fresh from her hens, the strawberries were fresh from her garden.\u00a0 This is September mind you!\u00a0 Fresh strawberries?\u00a0 Really?\u00a0We learned that Ireland has an extended Spring due to its cool temperatures and rainfall.\u00a0 Even when speaking about the summer, Gertie seemed to refer to it as something long passed.\u00a0 To me, the first week of September IS Summer, but not in Ireland \u2013 it\u2019s moved into colder temperatures and seasons.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-PrW4MzK\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-PrW4MzK\/0\/83a13668\/S\/P1030248-S.jpg\" alt=\"Waterford Hurling fandom\" \/><\/a><em>Blue and white flags seemed to be everywhere we drove in county Waterford and even in neighboring counties. \u00a0We found out each county has their own hurling team and Waterford was in the finals. \u00a0Waterford&#8217;s colors were blue and white. \u00a0We even saw this van all painted up and on display as we drove through a small town. \u00a0Unfortunately, Waterford lost the championship to Galway.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Our plan today started with a tour of caves that were noted to be in the most natural state.\u00a0 These were the Mitchelstown Caves.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt;&gt;So here is where I talk about navigating with Googlemaps offline.\u00a0 I\u2019m a staunch supporter of\u00a0offline Google maps.\u00a0 However, it makes a point of taking you the shortest route possible. \u00a0<del>Some<\/del> Many, of the roads in Ireland are less than what we would consider one-lane roads here and have hedges, or worse \u2013 stone walls, to define them.\u00a0 Credit cards would exclude Ireland from their CDW coverage.\u00a0 We understand why.&lt;&lt;&lt;<\/p>\n<p>We traveled the \u201cscenic\u201d route to the caves.\u00a0 It included a place called \u201cThe Vee\u201d, where we took many photos.\u00a0 And yet, another \u201cscenic\u201d route return.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-mLZ37MZ\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-mLZ37MZ\/0\/0eeb1392\/M\/P1030161-M.jpg\" alt=\"View from The Vee\" \/><\/a><em>The view from &#8220;The Vee&#8221;. \u00a0Notice a trace of road on the far left and another road just below it. \u00a0They are the same road. \u00a0There&#8217;s a hairpin curve out of frame on the left!<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>We were the only ones on the cave tour.\u00a0 They are upgraded to the extent that concrete steps have been poured and pathways set.\u00a0They even host events and concerts in the caves.\u00a0 I know that there are more popular cave tours in Clair County, and I didn\u2019t want to be part of a large tour.\u00a0 So in that scenario, Mitchelstown Caves filled the bill.\u00a0 They were very interesting and the story of their discovery and the features within them were cool.<\/p>\n<p>After that, we headed back towards Kilcannon B&amp;B and stopped to visit the Towers Walk.\u00a0 The full name is the Ballysaggartmore Towers Loop walk.\u00a0 Reading the signposts, it all became that much more interesting.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-xsRLVnd\/A\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-xsRLVnd\/0\/83fcbbd2\/M\/P1030168-M.jpg\" alt=\"Ballysaggartmore Towers Gatehouse\" width=\"544\" height=\"408\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe\u00a0Ballysaggartmore Towers\u00a0only exist due to one couple\u2019s petty jealousies. As the story goes, Arthur Kiely-Ussher inherited an estate at Ballysaggartmore when his father died. Arthur had a brother John, and the two brothers married two sisters, Elizabeth and Margaret. Arthur and Elizabeth were envious of Strancally Castle, John and Margaret\u2019s palatial residence, so Arthur set out to one-up him. He was only able to build two entrances (The Grand Lodge and The Towers) and the Servant\u2019s Tunnel before running out of money.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To make matters worse, the country was in the grips of the Great Famine and while many landlords reduced rent, Arthur evicted tenants who couldn\u2019t pay rent and then knocked their houses down. He was so disliked, a group tried (unsuccessfully) to assassinate him. Arthur eventually died in 1862 and would probably loathe the fact that his \u201cfolly\u201d is available for anyone and everyone to enjoy!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>It started raining as we walked the loop, but it was a pleasant walk and after crossing the creek with the \u201ctowers\u201d entrance, we made our way up to a small waterfall and returned to our car.<\/p>\n<p>It was a short drive to the small town of Lismore, a town developed around a grand castle.\u00a0 The castle itself is on private property, but the gardens are open to explore for a small fee.\u00a0 It was raining when we got our parking spot, so we opted to go to a nearby pub for a cup of tea and scones.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t take long for the rain to subside and we returned to the castle to explore its gardens. \u00a0There is a small admission price to enter, but well worth it. \u00a0The grounds are quite extensive and there were interesting artifacts here and there &#8211; including two very large chunks of the Berlin Wall.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-4pNmg24\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-4pNmg24\/1\/c1d40900\/S\/P1030184-S.jpg\" alt=\"Lismore Castle Gardens\" \/><\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-BpdqdnZ\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-BpdqdnZ\/2\/4d04614c\/S\/P1030182-S.jpg\" alt=\"Pieces of Berlin Wall at Lismore Castle Gardens\" \/><\/a>Although Lismore Castle is now a private residence, the grounds are open to the public for a small admission charge. \u00a0It was well worth the price as the grounds are quite extensive. \u00a0There were interesting artifacts here and there as well &#8211; including two very large chunks of the Berlin Wall.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Dinner that night was at 360 Cookhouse in Dungarvan, a place Gertie recommended.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-5x24DLQ\/0\/2633b0e6\/S\/P1030186-S.jpg\" alt=\"Dungarvan Harbor\" width=\"505\" height=\"379\" \/>Ever see a picture of a place and decide you must go there? \u00a0Such was Dungarvan. \u00a0It&#8217;s not on many Ireland itineraries, but I thought the harbor and colorful buildings were something special. \u00a0Fred and I figured out where those great pictures were taken from and scurried across the bridge before our dinner reservations that first evening to take our own fabulous photos!<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>9\/9<\/strong>\u2013 Another great breakfast by Gertie and we were off to the Rock of Cashel.\u00a0 This was a touristy spot, to say the least.\u00a0 But very close by, was a very non-touristy place, the Hore Abbey.\u00a0 We found a great parking spot, off the road (which we later realized was not the norm), and explored the Abbey.\u00a0 By the time we ventured out of the pasture that was the entrance of the Abbey, everyone was parked helter-skelter on the road!<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t get any better on our walk to the Rock of Cashel.\u00a0 As long as you left 8 feet to allow two-way traffic, it was a parking spot.<\/p>\n<p>At the RoC, we paid the entrance fee and realized that just because a place charges a fee, doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s any better than the free sites. \u00a0In contrast to Jerpoint Abbey, this was no more well preserved and packed with people. \u00a0It was with a bit of difficulty that we took pictures without hoards of tourists in them.\u00a0 Our best bet was to take pictures of anything 10 feet and above.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-3F6F85w\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-3F6F85w\/0\/de7c7217\/S\/P1030205-S.jpg\" alt=\"Hore Abbey and Rock of Cashel\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<em>Rock of Cashel as viewed from Hore Abbey. \u00a0We preferred Hore Abbey. \u00a0It was just as interesting and far fewer people. \u00a0Rock of Cashel has an entry fee &#8211; further proving that just because you have to pay to see a sight, doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s more worthwhile!<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>We drove a short distance to Athassel Abbey and explored.\u00a0 We were the only ones there.\u00a0 It was a place I had \u201cvirtually\u201d explored on Googlemaps to figure out where we should park!\u00a0But after Rock of Cashel, figured if we left enough room for a car to go around us, all was good.\u00a0 It was interesting, but not a must-do.<\/p>\n<p>Then we went to Glen of Aherlow, at the big Christ statue, and found the geocache nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner that night was at The Tannery \u2013 my birthday!\u00a0And it did not disappoint!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-skTfJK9\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-skTfJK9\/1\/13ad3786\/L\/P1030223-L.jpg\" alt=\"Athassel Abbey\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<em>The approach to Athassal Abbey. \u00a0You had to navigate some stone steps in a low wall to get into the field to get there. \u00a0It was very deteriorated and had extensive graveyards within the walls.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: right;\"><span
