{"id":1140,"date":"2018-05-03T17:58:30","date_gmt":"2018-05-04T00:58:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fmsreliability.com\/adventures\/?p=1140"},"modified":"2018-05-06T10:30:13","modified_gmt":"2018-05-06T17:30:13","slug":"arrival-kilkenny-and-copper-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fmsreliability.com\/adventures\/2018\/05\/03\/arrival-kilkenny-and-copper-coast\/","title":{"rendered":"Arrival &#8211; Kilkenny and Copper Coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>9\/5-6<\/strong>&#8211; Fred and I decided to visit Ireland, as we could do it easily as a roadtrip. \u00a0Friends had commented how much they loved Ireland, staying at Bed and Breakfast&#8217;s along the way. \u00a0It seemed like a nice change from trips we had been doing, since Ireland&#8217;s history is 1000&#8217;s of years old. \u00a0I took to researching like crazy and following the forums for ideas. As with much of Europe, there are some very touristy places, which we try to avoid unless there is something very unique about it. \u00a0Sometimes we were successful, sometimes not.<\/p>\n<p>Although September is Indian Summer in California, the weather along the east coast of the US this day was a bit sketchy. \u00a0Our flight departed slightly late and we only had an hour layover in Newark.\u00a0 But this became a non-issue because our flight from there to Ireland was late as well.\u00a0Hurricane Harvey had moved up the east coast and delayed flights throughout the day.\u00a0 But we finally arrived in Dublin airport, collected our luggage and car (which all was a simple process) and were on our way.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-NnvtSJb\/A\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-NnvtSJb\/0\/c84c7c92\/M\/P1030075-M.jpg\" alt=\"Kells Priory\" width=\"523\" height=\"347\" \/><\/a><em>I have to apologize for not having my camera the first half of the day. \u00a0It was packed in my suitcase and since we dove head-first into the adventure and Fred had his camera, I just left it there. \u00a0I do not have any pictures of Glendalough. \u00a0The photo above is Kell&#8217;s Priory, one of my top 5 monastic ruins that we saw on our trip, and one we saw later this day. \u00a0I have restrained myself from posting too many pictures of ruins (we saw a lot of ruins!) and only posting pics of the best.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>But on our way to where?\u00a0Our first stop was in Glendalough.\u00a0It is located in the Wicklow Mountains and seemed to have lots written up about it regarding the hiking trails and history.\u00a0 It was a \u201cmust do\u201d by all accounts.\u00a0 So we went up the very single-lane road to the far carpark and set off on some hiking trails.\u00a0 We did a short hike to see the Poulanass waterfall and circled around.\u00a0 We stumbled upon \u201cKevin\u2019s Cell\u201d and some church ruins \u2013 surrounded with an ancient graveyard.\u00a0 Then we decided to drive back to the main entrance of Glendalough and explore the ruins there.<\/p>\n<p>What a contrast!\u00a0There were hoards of people and just trying to enter the main \u201ctourist\u201d center was a madhouse.\u00a0 There were stalls with souvenir shops set up.\u00a0 We encountered two vehicles traveling on the wrong side of the road and we really couldn\u2019t venture into the grounds without disrupting a tour.\u00a0 We finally found a way into the site and then I was dismayed by the circus there.\u00a0 This was a place with ruins of a church, tower, and a huge graveyard \u2013 which people and kids just scurried about and had no respect for it being a GRAVEYARD!\u00a0 It all struck me as being disrespectful \u2013 Rest in Peace \u2013 Good luck to you!<\/p>\n<p>Off we went, me regretting that we didn\u2019t do an alternate stop (Rock of Dunamase).<\/p>\n<p>But arrival at Lawcus Farm Guesthouse really changed all that.\u00a0 My only regret is that we didn\u2019t stay here longer!\u00a0 We had the one night, pity.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-34GST6m\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-34GST6m\/1\/29a92322\/M\/P1030088-M.jpg\" alt=\"Lawcus Farm Guesthouse\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Lawcus Farm Guesthouse. This set the bar high for future accommodation and I wish we had stayed here longer! \u00a0You can&#8217;t quite see it in the photo, but on the right was a glass-roofed eating area where we had our breakfasts. \u00a0There was a huge cooking area in the center. \u00a0Mark and Ann-Marie were so energetic and truly had a vision for their land and guesthouse.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>There didn\u2019t seem to be anyone attending the guesthouse, but it was located along a river, was as green as you can possibly imagine, had pigs and chickens, and a big Mastiff we later learned was Bruce.\u00a0 Bruce seemed to round us up a trail through a yellow gate and to the front of a large house we hadn\u2019t noticed on the way down.\u00a0 Bruce is bred for sheepherding, he did well.\u00a0 We were at the home of the owners of the guesthouse and Ann-Marie greeted us promptly.\u00a0 She was red-headed, vivacious and energetic, and what you can imagine a welcoming Irish woman to be.\u00a0 She showed us around and gave us some hand-drawn maps with recommendations, loads of recommendations (you can\u2019t imagine).\u00a0 And to our antique-filled\u00a0room we went, only staying long enough to unload our luggage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-mGwhWWx\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-mGwhWWx\/0\/fe354b2b\/S\/P1030071-S.jpg\" alt=\"Kells Priory\" \/><\/a>We headed out to Kell\u2019s Priory.\u00a0 Ann-Marie said it was a 20-minute walk, but we chose to drive.\u00a0 Good thing too, because it was a mile and a half away.\u00a0It was huge!\u00a0 No admittance fee and we could just wander around.\u00a0 We looped around via a trail behind the Priory to Mullins\u00a0Mill, the 13-arch Bridge, and the small town of Kells.\u00a0 Then we got back into our car and drove to the town of Stoneyford.\u00a0 Following Ann-Marie\u2019s advice, we settled into Malzards Pub and ordered a meal that they pick up from the take-away Kebab place across the street.\u00a0 At the bar, we heard accordion and harmonica music.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-MTKMMdn\/A\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-MTKMMdn\/0\/3d20d16e\/M\/P1030083-M.jpg\" alt=\"13 Arch Bridge Near Mullins Mill\" width=\"507\" height=\"380\" \/><\/a><em>This is a 13-arch bridge at Mullins Mill. \u00a0Ann-Marie told us it was originally built as a one-lane bridge with 5 arches. \u00a0When they wanted to widen it, the engineers said it needed 8 arches. \u00a0Hence, a 13-arch bridge. \u00a0The roadway on top is solid, you would never know it was built in stages.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>It was an early night for us, after all the traveling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9\/7<\/strong>\u2013 We awoke the next morning and made our way to the totally glass-enclosed breakfast room.\u00a0 It was like a greenhouse, with a huge kitchen facility in the middle and Ann-Marie was there to inquire about our breakfast preferences.\u00a0 We came to realize that this was a larger guesthouse than originally perceived, with about 12 rooms perhaps.<\/p>\n<p>After breakfast (which was excellent), we were invited by Mark to see the main house.\u00a0 They built it themselves with reclaimed materials and furnishings and it was a real treat to visit it.\u00a0 Mark is an architect and his main criteria for building the house was not to pay for new materials. They bartered for flagstone of an abandoned church and re-purposed staircase banisters, and other vintage materials.\u00a0 It was awesome, to say the least.\u00a0 The hand-made dining table would easily seat 12 and had a tree trunk as its base!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-Qs53gj8\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-Qs53gj8\/0\/bb08222c\/S\/P1030103-S.jpg\" alt=\"Kilree Monastic Site\" \/><\/a>We reluctantly checked out of the fabulous guesthouse and headed for Kilree Monastic site, where we had to look out for the resident bull to gain access.\u00a0 There was a cool tower and an ancient cross (844AD!) plus graveyard to be seen there.<\/p>\n<p>Then we headed to Kilfane Church and encountered a man doing some 3D mapping with a special camera which Fred coveted.\u00a0 We climbed the tower of the church and the spiral steps were very steep and tiny and it was quite the adventure.\u00a0 We got great pictures!\u00a0 It was here we asked the 3D guy why there would be recent graves (2010) next to ancient ones and he stated they were probably landowners.\u00a0 It all seemed so odd to me.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-9njjLxd\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-9njjLxd\/0\/60595bd4\/S\/P1030121-S.jpg\" alt=\"Kilfane Church\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-xVk4KZV\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-xVk4KZV\/1\/68539853\/S\/P1030124-S.jpg\" alt=\"Steep Tower Steps at Kilfane Church\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>This was the entrance to the main portion of Kilfane Church. \u00a0Then it took a bit of sleuthing to find the entrance to the staircase to the tower. \u00a0Narrow spiral staircases seemed to be the norm of centuries past. \u00a0My little foot barely fit on a step!<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Jerpoint Abbey was next up, and our first attraction that required an entry fee.\u00a0 I asked about the \u201cHeritage Card\u201d that covers many of Ireland\u2019s paid sites and was shocked that the price had increased from 21 euros to 40 since 2016!\u00a0 I didn\u2019t see we\u2019d get our money\u2019s worth out of that deal so we decided to pay at each location.\u00a0 We explored the Abbey and enjoyed all the carvings that are along the columns and tombs.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-5CNwZ9G\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-5CNwZ9G\/0\/f733c4ee\/S\/P1030112-S.jpg\" alt=\"Jerpoint Abbey\" \/><\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-nhp73pr\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-nhp73pr\/1\/0d2f98f3\/S\/P1030118-S.jpg\" alt=\"Jerpoint Abbey\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Jerpoint Abbey is a monastic site known for its carvings on columns and even on the tombs. \u00a0You had to pay an entry fee to get in, but it included a few rooms set up with <\/em>aritacts<em> with museum lighting and information boards.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-PJzQzv4\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-PJzQzv4\/0\/975c5a22\/S\/P1030133-S.jpg\" alt=\"Dunhill Castle Ruins\" \/><\/a>Then we drove southward to Dunhill Castle ruins.\u00a0 We were the only ones about and the ruins were really interesting with signs that pointed out the castle had been destroyed by an attack (cannonball, or ???)\u00a0\u00a0Fred and I climbed around and I found a route to the top of the castle.\u00a0 Fred did not want to climb up there but I was game, and then I realized once I was at the top, that I was on top of a 1000 year old ceiling that was constructed without mortar.\u00a0 It was a great view however and I figured if it held up after 1000 years, it could take the weight of li\u2019l ole\u00a0me.<\/p>\n<p>We continued southward to an area known as the Copper Coast.\u00a0 Our first stop was at the beautiful Annestown Beach, where we saw two Irish Setters run into the tide and plop themselves down in the water, seemingly very proud of themselves.\u00a0 And we spoke to a couple from Australia who had been touring around for several weeks.\u00a0 Next up was Boatstrand Beach and as the name implies, boats were high and dry in the bay.\u00a0It was low tide and we were able to walk to the sea caves at the far end.\u00a0 They looked far more interesting from a distance than up close, but it was a pleasant walk and we were the only ones there.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-jBt94fH\/A\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-jBt94fH\/1\/1e5f6cfc\/M\/P1030136-M.jpg\" alt=\"Boatstrand Beach\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Any wonder they call it Boatstrand Beach?<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Our third stop along the Copper Coast was at Bunmahon Beach where we did the clifftop walk.\u00a0 The trail was covered in water in some places and we almost turned back until we saw a group able to traverse around the water with no issues, so we followed.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad we did because it ended at a beautiful cove with a sea stack and fantastic views from the cliffs!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmsphotos.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-H9hR3tW\/A\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Ireland-2017\/i-H9hR3tW\/0\/6ca40fd1\/M\/P1030148-M.jpg\" alt=\"The cliffs at Tankardstown, Bunmahon Cliff Walk\" width=\"464\" height=\"348\" \/><\/a><em>This is the termination point of our walk at Bunmahon Cliff Walk. \u00a0I&#8217;m glad we ventured out here, as the light was perfect for pictures like this!<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Our B&amp;B was the Kilcannon House, run by an older couple \u2013 Gertie and Tom.\u00a0 We met Mac, their beagle and Sag, their cat.\u00a0 We also met Ivan, from East Coast USA and who apparently has come to this very same B&amp;B every year for the past 20 years.\u00a0 We stayed 3 nights here.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner was in Dungarvan, about a 10-minute drive.\u00a0 There were some fantastic restaurants there (The Moorings, The Tannery, 360 Cookhouse).\u00a0I was very drawn to Dungarvan by a picture of its harbor.\u00a0 We figured out where that picture was taken from (the money shot, I called it. \u00a0And you&#8217;ll have to read halfway down the next page to see it) and got some sunset pictures there.<\/p>\n<p>We had dinner at The Moorings.\u00a0 Recommended.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr
