The growth in electrification of the automotive sector is happening quickly and the aerospace industry is set to follow a similar trend. These systems are pushing the high voltage performance of materials and one failure mode that requires consideration is partial discharge.
Unlike a full dielectric breakdown, partial discharge is a gradual degradation process. In this presentation, we will give an overview of partial discharge, including a look at environmental factors that can affect it, such as temperature, humidity, pressure and contamination. Additionally, we will look a range of detection techniques, test method standards and quantification methods. Finally, we will discuss our on-going test plans at NPL.
